Presentation of the school and El Puerto de Santa Maria
The Vocational High School at El Puerto de Santa Maria, between Guadalete River and Cadiz in the South of Spain and about 80,000 inhabitants.
The building of our vocational school, an XVII century convent who belonged to Dominique order’ friars, was given by the administration and is part of the historic and artistic city. The socioeconomic status of families is diverse, although most corresponds to between medium and low, from the economic point of view. However, a rather high percentage of students have a computer at home, although much less of whose who have Internet access. Major economic resources are the activities related to the vineyards and winemaking and tourism.
We are well communicated: nearest Airport is Jerez de la Frontera, however, Seville and Madrid are the best options because of they are well connected with rest of Europe and have a good connection by high speed trains with El Puerto de Santa Maria.
Our School has about 500 students and 65 teachers; there is only a vocational course in the field of Food Industries which conduces to a professional specialization: Senior Technician on Vineyard and Winemaking. We have a full equipped winery, wine distilling and grape oil extractor device, vineyards and wine tasting setup.
On February, we organize since 2009, a provincial fair where Cadiz wine makers show their products, as well as, we have been including wine tasting sessions and his food pairing with different andalusian dishes, two years ago. On the other hand, the grapes harvest begins, in your area, in mid-September at the same time as we start classes.
This will be our second project at our school, but firs with my vocational course students. They are from 19-50 years-old, because we have students working in the wine industry and young students who love both wine and vineyard culture.
